In
recent times, Brooklyn artists have generated an enormous
interest in the art world. Artists in Brooklyn command
a unique place, and our borough hosts one of the highest
concentration of resident artists anywhere. Brooklyn
used to be considered an "outer borough" and sometimes
of a backwater when compared to Manhattan. This "outer
borough" edge provides a unique perspective on the art
world. It offers Brooklyn artists the ability to develop
a body of work that is less dependent on the marketplace
and more in keeping with the individual artist's point
of view. With the Brooklyn Renaissance, Brooklyn is now
being actually re-born and discovered as an important
borough for the art community. This exhibition in all
media showcases and celebrates the individualistic styles
of Brooklyn artists.
Leon
Nicholas Kalas, the exhibition curator, is a Brooklyn
artist and a former gallery owner. Among his other curatorial
exhibitions are "Art Treasures to Live With: Picasso,
Dali, Renoir" (2002) and "Symbolism in Abstracts" (2005). |
