These new works culminate many years of influence and personal
style. There are many physical and historical layers in the paintings,
and these many layers of paint contain Bogat’s personal and
painting history.
These works, executed from 2001-2003, carry an octagonal motif
through the gamut of Bogat’s palette. This architectural form
was initially seen in a friend’s Long Island home and then
faceted through memory. The octagons recede from and advance to the
surface, are washed away, scraped, and then resurface again.
They are not sentimental; there is discord and strife in their
history. There are some unruly colors, some dry colors, such as the
mustard of desert sand, hidden in the layers. There is also luminosity.
The canvas is exuberant. A mix of impasto, washes of color
and ink, and intaglio combine to create their dimensionality.
“
Everything I’ve learned in 50 years of painting is in these
works,” Bogat said.
