Quality of paper can range from inexpensive mewsprint to 100% rag. Paper is measured by its basis weight (lb or g). Texture varies from smooth to rough. Cold-pressed and not pressed paper have a coarse texure with pits and valleys making them good for watercolors. Hot-pressed paper is smooth and good for drawing or opaque painting techniques.

Paper has a natural acidic level that can destroy its longevity. It is better to choose paper that is labeled pH-neutral or acid-free. There are pH testing pens in the market that will test the paper's pH level.
