Canvas can be bought pre-assembled or unassembled. Unassembled canvases are sold as single wooden bars in many different sizes that interlock with each other to form a stretcher. Stretched canvas allows artists to turn, twist or bounce the brush against the canvas to create different affects. On the other hand, rigid support provides artists the ability to apply multiple layers of primer and sand between coats.
